“A few years
ago my Muslim friends were good enough to ask me to preside at a meeting over a
‘Husein Day’ celebration. I found a big gathering listening with tense
attention the speeches of various speakers. Why was the audience so attentive?
There were two reasons: the tragic events of Kerbala were so heart rending that
no one could listen to their narration without a feeling of revulsion against
the perpetrators of the cruelties practised by Yazid’s mercenaries. That was
one.: The other was the significance of the struggle: viz; that the forces of
Good were fighting against the forces of Evil and for the time being the forces
of evil were triumphant. Why did Husein elect to fight Yazid, although in his
heart of hearts he knew what the end would be? He fought in the interest of
truth, in the interest of right.
His inspiring
example has worked like a torch of light against elements of Darkness all these
years.”
