Dr. Seyed Mostafa Muhaqqiq-Daamaad


A well-regarded scholar who teaches Law in Tehran University.

Biography 

 

   He was born in 1946 into a religious family. His father was the late Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Muhaqqiq Damad who was the son-in-law of `Allama Ha'iri Yazdi (the founder of the Howzah ilmiyyah of Qom).
   When he finished his preliminary studies he entered the Howzah in Qom. Damad learned the intellectual disciplines and Islamic philosophy mostly from the learned Murtada Mutahhari, and Fiqh and Usool (principles) from eminent scholars such as Ayatollah Uzma Amuli, Laarijani, and Ayatollah Uzma Murtada Ha’ iri Yazdi. Later, he began teaching in the Islamic Seminary of Qom while attending Tehran University, where he obtained his Masters in Islamic Law and Philosophy.
   In 1988, Damad entered Lufin University in Belgium to pursue higher studies in International Law. After passing the required stages he was able to get his Ph.D. The title of his thesis was "Protection of Individuals in Times of Armed Conflict according to International and Islamic Law". Professor Wurhon (the head of the International Law Department at Lufin University) guided Damad. His thesis was accepted by the Academic Evaluation Committee with excellent grades. The mentioned thesis is now under publication.
   In 1981 he was appointed as the president of the Internal Investigation Bureau by the Supreme Judicial Council of the time; he resigned 1991. In 1986, Damad became a member of the Academic Council of the Faculty of Law, and then in 1991 he was accepted as a constant member of the Academy of Sciences.
   At present, he is a professor of Law at Tehran University, and the head of the Islamic studies Department in the Academy of Sciences. He is also a member of the board of directors and academic councils for universities and educational/research centers of Iran.
   Damad has complete command of English, Arabic, and knows French well. Until now, he has written ten books and many articles on Law, Philosophy, and Religion, in the English, Arabic and Persian languages. He has attended many international conferences and delivered many speeches. Twice a week, Damad gives lectures for the Howzah students in Qom. He is also teaching Islamic Civil Law in the Faculty of Law in Tehran at Shahid Bihishti Training College and Shahid Mutahhari College.
